If the Niagara IceDogs have an abundance of anything other than shear talent, it’s defenders. With 9 defenders currently rostered Marty Williamson is not closed minded to clearing out some of the younger guys who will not help with the IceDogs’ run at a championship this year.  (more…)

The Erie Otters are poised to make a serious run, one issue they will face is lack of experience. While they are currently tied with Ottawa for title of oldest D core in the league with an average age of 1995.56, they have the youngest forward group in the league with an average age of 1996.43. There are only 14 out of 25 Erie Otters roster players with playoff experience and most of those have not exceeded 10 playoff games played. How do you fix this?

You go out and acquire that experience and what could be better than going right to the defending OHL cup champions.

I’m told that the Erie Otters have had discussions with Mike Kelly regarding a few Guelph Storm skaters. Conversations primarily regarding LW Tyler Bertuzzi as well as what we’ll call less significant conversations regarding Ben Harpur & Jason Dickinson. I’m told said discussions are nothing more than Mike Kelly guaging interest in his assets and the Erie Otters have little to no interest at this time. All 3 of those players are drafted and signed with an NHL club. Bertuzzi, nephew of NHLer Todd Bertuzzi is signed with the Detroit Redwings while Dickinson is signed with the Dallas Stars and Harpur just signed his entry level deal last week with the Ottawa Senators.

The Guelph Storm cleared an overage spot by waiving forward Justin Auger, this allows them the sufficient space to acquire an overage in any trade with the Erie Otters who have stated they are looking to solve their overage problem sooner rather than later. The Otters are currently one overager over the OHL’s limit of 3 and between Kurtis MacDermid, Cory Genovese, Joel Wigle and Troy Donnay, one of them will need to go.

Add the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds into the mix for Tyler Bertuzzi. Reports have surfaced that the Greyhounds may have an interest in the left winger. We know the Greyhounds and Storm have a history of making deals and the Greyhounds could certainly use a player like Bertuzzi to load up for a run at the OHL title.

The Storm do not want a return centered around picks, they already have boat loads. They want a good, serviceable young player as the main part of any deal. Guelph is a one-stop-shop so to speak and Mike Kelly knows his club holds many of the necessary cards to build an OHL champion. It’s this reason that none of his assets will move for anything less than what will originally be seen as an overpayment.
