When RedWings prospect Jake Paterson first returned from the NHL’s Detroit RedWings camp, Spirit GM Jim Paliafito wasted no time in publicly addressing Paterson’s future with the Saginaw Spirit saying it likely wouldn’t last much longer as Paterson wants and deserves to be on a contending team, which the Spirit most certainly are not.

Grey Cup Sunday was not quiet by any means around the Ontario Hockey League at least, not for the Owen Sound Attack and Saginaw Spirit who were finalizing details that would see Detroit Redwings prospect Jake Paterson head from Saginaw to Owen Sound in exchange for Jack Flinn and draft picks. Right as I was sitting down for kickoff in the CFL’s championship event, I received a text from a credible source saying Jake Paterson had been traded. I then messaged a source in Owen Sound who said “They were close on a goalie, Flinn and picks the other way.” To confirm, I then messaged two GM’s in the league who said Paterson to Owen Sound in exchange for Flinn and picks without me telling them what I had previously learned.

So why haven’t Paterson and Flinn switched locations? I’m told Jack Flinn’s family said no to the trade. Flinn is a native of Halifax, NS who originally came to the OHL VIA the QMJHL. Flinn’s grandma is nearby to Owen Sound.

Next season, Jack Flinn would count against the Attack’s overage total and I don’t believe the Attack have Flinn in their plans. If he doesn’t accept a trade somewhere soon, he may just find himself on waivers in which case Saginaw could place a claim on him in which case Flinn would have no choice but to report or hang up the skates.

The Saginaw Spirit released import goalie Nikita Serebryakov on Saturday, in a move believed to make room for Flinn (as Flinn would take the vast majority of starts.) Releasing players in the OHL does not require league permission, so there is no reason for the press release to come on Monday meanwhile the post (currently visable on the Saginaw Spirit website) is dated for Sunday, the day Paterson was supposed to be acquired.

The deal was so close to done in Owen Sound teammates were saying their goodbyes to their goaltender Jack Flinn while Jake Paterson was packing up all his stuff and getting his sticks together at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw, MI.

At the end of the day, Paterson is still a member of the Spirit and the Attack continue on with Jack Flinn. Obviously there was something there more than just a rumour but never came into fruition.

Owen SoundAccording to @AttackInsider, the Owen Sound Attack are looking to move RW Brett Hargrave. Brett has struggled to find a home in the OHL since being drafted in the 1st round, 13th overall by the Sarnia Sting in the 2012 OHL priority selection.

Brett Hargrave was acquired by the Attack at the beginning of the 2013-14 OHL season in an agreement that saw the Sarnia Sting¬†receive a 4th round pick in 2014, a second round pick in 2016, and Windsor’s third round pick in 2017. Another part of the agreement was that the Sting would foot the bill for a part of Hargrave’s education package. Brett went on to score 10 points in 50 games for the Attack that season.

Now, Brett Hargrave has been among the Owen Sound Attack’s scratch list for every single game so far this young 2014-2015 season with the Owen Sound Attack.

It’s quite obvious to me that Hargrave is seeking yet another trade and the Attack are trying to make it happen for him. I believe the best thing for Hargrave is to play in his hometown of North Bat with Stan Butler and the Battalion. Hargrave seems to have lost his way a little bit and I think being around a man such as Stan Butler may just rejuvenate Hargrave’s career.

According to @AttackInsider, the Attack are actively looking to move Hargrave but would like to make something happen where the acquiring team foots some of his education bill.
