The Mississauga Steelheads have acquired Ryan McLeod from the Flint Firebirds. In exchange, Flint receives a package of 6 draft choices as well as two compensatory picks.

To Mississauga:
– Ryan McLeod

To Flint:
– 2nd Round Pick (Sudbury, 2016)
– 2nd Round Pick (Sudbury, 2017, Conditional)
– 2nd Round Pick (Sudbury, 2018)
– 3rd Round Pick (2016)
– 3rd Round Pick (2018)
– 3rd Round Pick (2019)

Going into this year’s OHL draft, Ryan was one of the most highly sought out players available among the top of this year’s class and it was no secret that the Steelheads wanted him and were in a position where they could select Ryan with their 4th overall selection.

An unwritten rule states that if a sibling is in the league, the team that has that sibling receives first crack at the up and coming brother. The Firebirds, entering their first year of play in the OHL under their new identity, understandably chose Ryan with their 3rd overall selection. One pick before the Steelheads chose Owen Tippett, 4th overall.

After choosing to not report to Flint, Ryan will be joining his older brother Michael, who was the Steelheads 5th overall selection in last year’s OHL Priority Selection.

As a result of a player who was selected in the top 5 choosing not to report to the club that drafted him, the Firebirds also receive an extra 1st and 2nd round pick in next year’s OHL Priority Selection.

The Mississauga Steelheads cleared an overage spot by dealing RW Lucas Venuto to the Windsor Spitfires.

The Mississauga Steelheads have announced the acquisition of the rights to 1996 born defender, Justin Bean.

Before the acquisition, the Steelheads had 6 defenders on their roster. Jared Walsh did not dress for them in London, leaving them with five active with a suspension looming for disgruntled Nick Zottl as a result of receiving a match penalty and a game misconduct for cross checking Knights enforcer Tait Seguin.

In return for Bean, who has yet to dress in an OHL game this season, the Bulls receive a 7th round pick in 2015.

Having a coach who also acts as GM is kind of like having a CEO who is also the chairman of the board. There are so many ethical issues with structuring any organization like that. Relative to the Steelheads, coach/GM James Boyd needs to make it past the first round of the playoffs in order to ensure his job for next year. (more…)
