As the OHL Trade Freeze lifted on the morning of August 1st, rumours were flying, largely surrounding the Kitchener Rangers and what they would do with their disgruntled former 2nd round pick, defenseman Merrick Rippon.

To Mississauga:
– Merrick Rippon

To Kitchener:
– 2nd Round Pick (NIA-2018)
– 2nd Round Pick (2021)
– Conditional Pick (2023)

The “conditional pick” will be either a 2nd, 3rd or a 4th round selection depending on various external items such as years spent in the OHL and NHL draft.

Rippon, who had committed to play at Providence College next year, requested a trade in early July from the Rangers. The reason remains unknown, however their is a large amount of speculation that it has to do with a parent’s ongoing feud with that of a potential Rangers teammate, and a fellow Ottawa minor hockey product, regardless, Rippon did not want to be a Kitchener Ranger.

As interest began to grow in the services of the potential first round NHL talent, eventually Rippon de-committed from Providence College indicating he would be playing in the Ontario Hockey League next year.

The Hamilton Bulldogs were also interested in acquiring the Ottawa native, but were eventually outbid by the Steelheads.
