The Guelph Storm announced the selection of defender Ryan Merkley with their 1st Overall Selection in what is actually Saturday’s OHL Draft. The Storm did so at a news conference held at the Sleeman Center on Friday morning.

Merkley lead the minor midget Toronto Jr. Canadiens of the GTHL in scoring with 7 goals and 37 assists for 44 points in just 33 regular season games. It was his second season playing minor midget hockey and he was named captain, largely in part because of his combination of experience and leadership ability.

The rest of the first round and following 14 rounds will conclude tomorrow in what will be a big day for many players, families and friends.

The draft is always a crapchute but going on what I’ve heard in various conversations the top 8 will look something like this:
1. Guelph – Ryan Merkley
2. Sudbury – Owen Lalonde
3. Hamilton – Aidan Dudas
4. Flint – Ty Dellandrea
5. Saginaw – Connor Roberts
6. Oshawa – Giovanni Villati
7. Mississauga – Kirill Nizhnikov

The London Knights really like Eric Guest, I have personally seen both Dale and Dylan Hunter already meeting with their family following a game about a month ago. If he is available by the time the Knights are on the clock, they will be selecting the hometown boy. The Knights also swapped draft picks with the Peterborough Petes on Friday, as of now, the Knights and GM Basil McCrae do not expect any other trades.

The Windsor Spitfires would love to be able to select F Hunter Holmes by the time they are on the clock. If Holmes is still available, look for Windsor to be selecting him.

As always, things change so stay tuned on Twitter for updates!
