Halfway through the Firebirds inaugural OHL season, the Firebirds have announced the firing of General Manager Terry Christensen. Head Coach John Gruden, who had been fired from that role and then rehired within 24 hours takes over the responsibilities of General Manager. Ever since the player’s walkout, Terry’s intentions have been questioned publicly and internally, they’ve been questioned since long before then.

It has since been announced that Terry will be staying with the club in one capacity or another but with nowhere near the responsibilities he carried as General Manager.

With everything that has gone on in Flint throughout their first year in operation, many have accused Terry of trying to sabotage the mission in order to land the Head Coaching gig he had been shooting for since day one. Making trades such as the Nedeljkovic trade and the Connor Chatham trade go along way to supporting that theory.

When the Firebirds came back and it was said that there was one more issue standing in the way of where they were and them being on the ice, that one issue was Terry Christensen. The players did not trust his intentions and thought he wouldn’t stop until he had John Gruden’s job, whether that meant making bad trades, talking up Hakon Nilsen to owner/dad Rolf, the players did not trust Terry one eyeota.

Ironically enough, following the trade that saw big power forward Connor Chatham and two early round draft choices to Windsor in exchange for an unproven forward, it was John Gruden who would be taking over Christensen’s job.

The players and every one of the Firebirds staff absolutely love John Gruden, this move is absolutely best for the future of the Flint Firebirds.

Rumour Update

To make this even more confusing, it’s been said that Terry did not want to pull the trigger on the Connor Chatham trade and ownership stepped in and got it done. Could this be a move to make the firing which came hours following the trade seem warranted, well that’s what I’m assuming.

As well, I’m told that there was something personal between Firebirds property Mitch Jones and GM Terry Christensen that would keep the Firebirds from trading the rights to the big defender. Jones is currently playing in the ECHL with Alaska and his younger brother Max currently plays for the OHL’s London Knights. I’ve speculated of Mitch being traded to London since last year and can tell you that Mitch would consider an OHL comeback “if the situation was right.” Mitch and now GM John Gruden are on very good terms as Mitch skated with John as recently as last summer. Since the Knights have now acquired an OA defender in Jacob Graves, the possibility Mitch goes there is slim at best.

Rumours also flying about the Firebirds trading Dallas Stars prospect Alex Peters. They are entertaining the idea and we could very well see a move involving Peters before the deadline on January 11. I’m told the Sarnia Sting and the London Knights have interest, but that was before the Knights went out and acquired OA D and the Sting went out and spent a king’s ransom on Travis Konecny/Sam Studnicka
