On Sunday, the Windsor Spitfires announced their acquisition of overage winger Connor Chatham from the Flint Firebirds. In exchange the Spitfires sent underachieving forward Luke Kirwan to Flint. To Windsor:
– Connor Chatham
– 2nd Round Draft Pick (NIA, 2017)
– 4th Round Draft Pick (2017)

To Flint:
– Luke Kirwan

Connor Chatham, all 6’02 and 225lbs of him, has managed to score 29 points consisting of 11 goals and 18 assists in 34 games played for a below average Flint Firebirds franchise which is currently powering through it’s drama ridden first year in the Ontario Hockey League. The native of Shiloh, Illinois is a prospect of the New Jersey Devils after their selection of him in the 3rd round of the 2014 NHL draft.

Kirwan, originally a 2nd round selection of the Guelph Storm had his rights traded to the Windsor Spitfires in a part II of the Kerby Rychel trade which had taken place earlier on that year. Kirwan who at that point was an extremely highly touted American prospect has since posted 23 points in 90 games played in parts of two seasons for the Windsor Spitfires and in that span, also skated for a combined -29.

So why would Flint give up a promising power forward as well as two high round draft choices for Luke Kirwan? Well, not only did they want to get something for Connor Chatham but also because they believe in Kirwan. Head Coach John Gruden and Kirwan are familiar with each other and if Gruden can get what people thought Kirwan had two years ago, out of him now, the trade will look much less of a fleecing.

Kirwan is a native of Dewitt, New York and is a prospect eligible for the 2016 NHL Draft.
