The London Knights have announced the acquisition of overage goaltender Brendan Burke from the Calgary Hitmen (WHL) VIA the Guelph Storm.  In exchange, the Storm receive a 6th round draft choice in 2016.

To London:

  • Brendan Burke

To Guelph:

  • 6th Round Draft Pick (2016)

The Knights need to take some of the load off of sophomore goaltender Tyler Parsons and the acquisition of Burke, who brings lots of experience and solid numbers, will certainly do that.

Burke, originally from Scottsdale, Arizona has played parts of 5 seasons in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks and the Calgary Hitmen. He brings to London, a 1.91 goals against average with a .931 save percentage so far this season. Burke was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the 6th round of the 2013 NHL entry draft. He never signed his entry level deal and is now an NHL free agent.

As for why he had to go through Guelph to get to London; By way of being last in the league, the Storm have first claim on anyone placed on waivers, much like they did a month or so ago when Garret Hughson was claimed by the Niagara IceDogs and traded to Windsor shortly thereafter. Instead of letting him go through waivers to a team like Owen Sound for free, they knew there was interest then placed the claim and  ended up getting something for him.

Like with Hughson, there were other teams that wanted Brendan Burke who is the son of former NHL goaltender, Sean Burke. The Owen Sound Attack likely among them as they have received multiple sub par performances from backup goaltender Daniel Dekoning of late.

The Knights now carry the allowed number of 3 overage players in forwards Jack Hidi, Aaron Berisha and newly acquired goaltender Brendan Burke.

This is interesting. Now, with Emanuel Vella, who was the backup, now being in the 3rd string spot again, I wonder if this could mean a deal made by London and Owen Sound. London needs a big, stay-at-home defender, Owen Sound’s Tyler MacArthur fits that bill. Emanuel Vella may interest the Attack to at least compete with Dekoning for the backup job. Thoughts?

I mean, it could happen and I do see Vella as now’s Liam Herbst (minus injuries) but I don’t think OS will want to give up a guy with 2 more seasons of eligibility.

That’s fair, however, when thinking of the Attack’s back end, there are only 2 others that I think London could be interested in; Thomas Schemitsch and Jarret Meyer. Are one of those guys more in your mind? Personally, out of those 2 guys, I highly doubt the Attack would like to part with Meyer, just because of his freakish size. Is Schemitsch more of a likely scenario?

      • insiderohl says:

I’d say so. Fantasy land though.
