The Windsor Spitfires have acquired overage goaltender Garret Hughson from the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL.

Hughson, a native of Foremost, Alberta joins the Ontario Hockey League’s Spitfires after being placed on CHL waivers on Monday, according to agent Scott Norton. Hughson was claimed by the Niagara IceDogs before being traded to Windsor in exchange for a 15th round draft choice.

The move comes just a couple weeks after the Spitfires acquired overage netminder Michael Giugovaz from the London Knights and puts the Spitfires over the allowed limit of 3 overagers per team. GM Warren Rychel will need to make yet a decision between lone Norwegian, Markus Soberg, Bradley Latour and the recently acquired Giugovaz and Hughson.

Michael Giugovaz has received a fair shot at earning the Spitfires starting job having started over half of Windsor’s games so far this season however it isn’t until 35 games played that Windsor owes London the conditional 7th round pick that they used to acquire him. If Hughson can come in and prove himself over Giugovaz, Rychel could release Giugovaz before his 35 games played and keep that 7th round pick.

Over parts of 4 seasons and 105 games played in the WHL with a Spokane squad that’s been mediocre, Hughson carries a combined GAA of 3.68 and a save percentage of .879.
