Spirit and Steelheads Come Together on Blockbuster

Having a coach who also acts as GM is kind of like having a CEO who is also the chairman of the board. There are so many ethical issues with structuring any organization like that. Relative to the Steelheads, coach/GM James Boyd needs to make it past the first round of the playoffs in order to ensure his job for next year. If he misses playoffs he will be fired and a first round exit will most likely result in Boyd being canned as well.

With this in mind, the Steelheads went out and payed an astronomical price to the Saginaw Spirit for Jimmy Lodge. They recently were denied Nick Baptiste and missed out on Ho-Sang just last week. Boyd needed to do something quick in order to ensure his job for next season.

To Saginaw:

– Gregory Di Tomaso (1996 born D)
– Jesse Barwell (1997 born C)
– Mississauga’s 3rd Round Pick in 2015
– Mississauga’s 6th Round Pick in 2016
– Sudbury’s 2nd Round Pick in 2017 (Conditional upon extra year)

To Mississauga:

– Jimmy Lodge (1995 born RW)

Jimmy Lodge is a prospect of the Winnipeg Jets having been drafted in the 3rd round, 2013, by the Winnipeg Jets. Being a 1995 birth year, it is likely this is his last go round in the OHL although he could return for an overage season next year, hence the conditional 2nd that went to Saginaw.

It’s one thing to sell the future for a chance at a championship, but as of now that is not Boyd’s intention, nor is it realistic. He’s building selfishly for this year to keep his job, and sacrificing what was a bright(ish) future in Mississauga in doing so.
